Weeks 3-6 at Elk Hills were jam packed with learning, field trips, continuing traditions, and forming new friendships and bonds!
September 2nd marked the first day of Walk to Learn! Students went to their reading and/or math intervention groups for small group instruction Monday-Thursday. The first cycle of Walk to Learn concluded on September 18th and assessments and regrouping began this morning! Our next round of intervention groups start on September 29th.
September 5th also marked the first time we held a First Friday Character Strong assembly! Students went to the auditorium to learn about September's Character Strong Pillar: Respect. They watched a short video on what it means to be respectful and they got the chance to tell us what respect means to them and how they can show respect to each other, to staff, and to their families.
We started a new partnership with the Bakersfield Museum of Art to give our 5th grade students weekly art enrichment. Mrs. Iman comes most Fridays and gives a lesson in art theory/history and then the students work on an art project that will be entered into the museum for an art show later in the school year! The 5th grade class had their first lesson on September 5th, and they were very intrigued by it.
Elk Hills 6th-8th grade students hit the ground running with multiple Power League Flag Football and Volleyball games!
We had our first Mentorship Meet-Up of the school year on September 10th. This is the fifth year running our Staff/Student Mentoring Program. Every student is assigned a staff mentor, and all staff members are assigned a small group of mentees. Everyone participates in this program and we meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 1-1:30PM for a small group activity. Our mentorship program is a hit with everyone and offers an extra layer of support for each one of our Elks! Ask your student about their mentor today!
On September 12th we hosted our third annual Grandparents’ Day Celebration! We had over 100 grandparents show up to be recognized and loved by their grandchildren! Thank you to everyone who came out.
Mrs. Cassandra held the first weekly Study Hall for our 6th-8th grade students. Study Hall is available to 6th-8th grade students every Thursday during their lunch recess to catch up on missed work or work on upcoming projects/assignments. Space is limited so they must sign up to ensure their spot.
Mr. Medina took his 7th grade class to CSUB for a science-based learning trip on September 19th. Students who attended spent the day exploring the university campus and learning about science-related topics!
Last but not least, our Student Council candidates gave their speeches and the students got to vote. Results to be announced soon!
September has been a busy month on the Elk Hills campus!

Our 2nd & 3rd grade classes will be visiting the Bakersfield College Planetarium on Tuesday, September 23. Students will be provided a school lunch but may also bring their own. We will watch the presentation and have lunch on the grass at BC. Please see the post for more information. If you would like to chaperone, please contact your student's teacher.

When it comes to attendance, students self-report that poor sleep is the second highest reason why they missed school. This is one reason why healthy sleeping habits are so important! Sleep, or lack thereof, affects our mood, appetite, and ability to function at a normal level throughout the day- these things can lead to behavioral issues and low academic performance at school.
One way to create healthy sleeping habits is to turn off electronics one hour before going to sleep. Instead, try reading a book (or reading to your child/having them read to you- this is also a great bonding exercise and awesome way to build those reading skills!), meditating, journaling, or just lying down and relaxing in a cool, dark, quiet environment. The world is noisy. We need quiet time to get relaxed!
Sweet dreams!
