Sleep helps our children grow!
• Adequate sleep improves grades, learning abilities, and memory
• Enhance positive moods and behavior
• Healthier weight and appearance
• Help perform better in sports and other extracurricular activities
Ensuring that our youth get ample, rejuvenating sleep is crucial for their overall well-being and can pave the way for a brighter future!

Exposure to blue light at night disrupts natural sleep patterns, so avoiding it before bedtime is most beneficial for a good night's rest. Blue light from the sun helps to keep us alert during the day, and this is also the same effect that the screens of our smart devices create. Make it a habit of turning off smart devices 2-3 hours before bedtime for optimal sleep.

Join us tomorrow for volleyball as we take on Maricopa on our home turf! The game starts at 3:30 PM. Elk Hills School District is located at 501 Kern St, Tupman, CA 93276 #GOELKS #WeAreElks

Here are some tips for handling TVs, tablets, phones, and other tech to make sure your kids get a good night's sleep.
• Make it a habit to turn off smart devices 2 hours before bedtime. This practice can help children wind down before sleeping.
• Turn off notifications on their devices to reduce distractions.
• Use "night mode" on children's devices before it gets dark to block the blue light. Blue light from screens can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep.
• Keep smart devices out of the bedroom to avoid temptations.
• Consider creating a Family Tech Planner to set boundaries for screen time.
• Lastly, lead by example and be a role model for your children by setting limits on your own screen time.

According to Project Sleep, nearly 70% of high school adolescents sleep less than the recommended 8-9 hours a night.
Dr. Michael Figueroa, who supports the Children's Cabinet of West Kern, indicates that students report being absent because they stay up late scrolling through social media or playing video games.
Does this sound familiar? Lack of adequate sleep can have significant effects on students' academic performance, mental health, and overall physical well-being. From September 16-20, 2024, we are collaborating with Student Sleep Health Week, organized by American Academy of Sleep Medicine to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring that children get sufficient sleep.
