Staff Spotlight: Miss Negrete, 1st grade teacher
Hello! My name is Isabel Negrete. I'm excited to be Elk Hills' first grade teacher! This is my 1st year as a teacher, but I have been working in education for about 4 years and I absolutely love it. I earned my bachelor's degree in Liberal studies from CSUB. I love that Elk Hills is a small school and the sense of community that comes along with it. I’m looking forward to creating a safe space for children to learn and having a little class family. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family as well as watching movies and going to amusement parks. I love all things Disney and Universal studios! This school year we will explore fascinating topics and engage in interactive activities in our classroom. We will have fun, challenging tasks that will help us reach our goals! I will guide and support each student to the best of my abilities. I’m looking forward to a successful school year!

Exposure to blue light at night disrupts natural sleep patterns, so avoiding it before bedtime is most beneficial for a good night's rest. Blue light from the sun helps to keep us alert during the day, and this is also the same effect that the screens of our smart devices create. Make it a habit of turning off smart devices 2-3 hours before bedtime for optimal sleep.

Here are some tips for handling TVs, tablets, phones, and other tech to make sure your kids get a good night's sleep.
• Make it a habit to turn off smart devices 2 hours before bedtime. This practice can help children wind down before sleeping.
• Turn off notifications on their devices to reduce distractions.
• Use "night mode" on children's devices before it gets dark to block the blue light. Blue light from screens can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep.
• Keep smart devices out of the bedroom to avoid temptations.
• Consider creating a Family Tech Planner to set boundaries for screen time.
• Lastly, lead by example and be a role model for your children by setting limits on your own screen time.

Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Tiffany/1st Grade Aide
My name is Mrs Tiffany, this will be my second year as an aide at Elk Hills. I have two daughters that have gone to Elk Hills since kindergarten. I love being a part of the Elk Hills community because it’s like a family. Since it’s such a small school you really get to know the staff and the students. I’m so excited for this school year! I love spending time with my family, and riding horses. We stay busy with barrel racing and rodeo. We also love to travel and do anything outdoors.

According to Project Sleep, nearly 70% of high school adolescents sleep less than the recommended 8-9 hours a night.
Dr. Michael Figueroa, who supports the Children's Cabinet of West Kern, indicates that students report being absent because they stay up late scrolling through social media or playing video games.
Does this sound familiar? Lack of adequate sleep can have significant effects on students' academic performance, mental health, and overall physical well-being. From September 16-20, 2024, we are collaborating with Student Sleep Health Week, organized by American Academy of Sleep Medicine to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring that children get sufficient sleep.
