Dear Elk Hills Families,
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! As we move through the beginning of the school year you might hear your child talk about their mentor, this is because Elk Hills School District established a school-wide mentorship program during the 2020-21 school year. Our mentorship program matches all staff members with a small group of student mentees in order to give all of our students an extra person of support while at school. Mentors typically have a small group of 5-8 mentees with whom they meet for 30 minutes on the last school Wednesday of every month for a group activity. Your child’s mentor serves as a cheerleader for all of their accomplishments, big or small, but mentors can also be on the lookout for signs of distress in your child and guide them to the proper channel of support.
Studies have shown that children who have a mentor are less likely to drop out of high school, less likely to use drugs and/or alcohol, and have higher self-esteem. Our first Meet & Greet will be at the end of September, please be sure to talk to your child about his or her mentor and encourage your student to speak with their mentor if they are ever having an issue at school. Encourage your child to attend school on the days we have our Mentorship Meet & Greets, and if your child is not connecting with his or her mentor please be sure to have them speak to Mrs. Cassandra about it. We want to ensure that our students feel comfortable with their mentors!
If you would like more information about the mentorship program please email our Community Engagement Coordinator, Cassandra McGowan, at cacmgowan@elkhills.org.
Looking forward to an amazing 2023-24 school year!

September is Attendance Awareness Month! Help your child succeed in reading by getting them to school on time everyday! Poor attendance early in a student's schooling can influence whether they can read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade. #StriveForLessThan5 #ElksInSchool

Congratulations to our August attendance winner, Cali! Cali was entered into a drawing with all the students who had a 97% attendance rate or greater for the month of August. Keep up the great work!

Community Bingo Night is this Thursday, September 21st, from 5PM-6:30PM in the Elk Hills School cafeteria! Join us for an evening of fun! Bingo is free, all-ages, and open to everyone! Can't wait to see you all on Thursday!

Thank you to all the grandparents who allowed us to celebrate them today! Elk Hills first annual Grandparents' Day celebration was amazing! More photos will be posted to our website in the coming week. #ElkHillsStrong
